Are Professional Athletes Overpaid Essay - 1776 Words

In thirteen years of golf, Tiger Woods has made over a billion dollars making him the highest paid athlete ever. He has been the highest paid athlete now for five years in a row. We all know that many people in the world watch him play every weekend and admire him, but is the amount of entertainment he provides really worth 128 million dollars a year? Tiger is only one of many professional athletes who are extremely overpaid. â€Å"People forget that sports is entertainment,† says Leonard Armato, a sports agent. Although professional athletes provide entertainment for millions of viewers around the world, they are overpaid because the millions of dollars that they make could be distributed more evenly throughout society and go to things of a†¦show more content†¦Staying physically fit at all times increases playing stamina and their abilities, but how is that different than the everyday man or woman that takes his or her work home with them at night? Here’s a s cenario that may put things into perspective. A young sports fan has entered the work force as a welder. He is relatively new to the profession but is doing well enough. This fan works hard to pay off his bills and have money for the future. He wants to watch his favorite player win the game for the team, but by the time he buys the ticket and eats the outrageously priced food the total bill comes up to a few hundred dollars for just one night. Many people can’t afford to do this because they are trying to save enough money to put their kids through college and cover their basic needs while the professional athletes can decide where to spend the rest of their money. He then sits and watches his favorite player go through the game not putting much effort into it. This scenario raises the question: Do athletes put in enough hard work to receive the amounts of pay they do? This can be seen as robbing the sports fans because the athlete didn’t even try while the welder mus t work hard all his life to stay afloat (Are Professional). On the other side of the story, that same every day person may be slacking at his/her job which would be considered as being overpaid for lack of effort (Are Professional).
